Our Next Meeting

This is such a sad time for us. Next Tuesday's meeting will begin with some happy memories of Mairead so your personal thoughts will be very welcome.

The meeting itself was intended for me to read a chapter or two of my story - however, depending on the time, I will step aside and let you all read your homework "The Crossing" first. We asked for 750-1,000 words this time so it will be interesting to listen to your work. If there is time after that then I will read a passage or two for feedback. The meeting is on Tuesday next, 5th June. Start time is 7.30 when the door will be locked.

Here is a comment that Mairead sent to her friend Carol in America. It was sent four years ago just after she joined our group:

Dave took the photo so he was the only one not in it, he is the President of the group. It has been in existence with over forty years now. And I have been there since July or four meetings.  I feel so very comfortable here.   I am with good people.   I told you I would get our of my house.   I have come to the very best place.   Now it is your turn to fly from the nest.

That is a short but very poignant message - both Carol and Mairead were in similar situations at the time. The photo, incidentally, was one that we took at the same time as the picture on the cover of "Words".

It is with heavy heart that some very sad news has been received. Our friend Mairead has passed away.

At this stage there is no further information but as soon as we hear details of the funeral arrangements then this will be circulated.

Such sad news.

Mairead, bless her, will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Our Facebook presence...

With immediate effect our Facebook page has been taken down. Unfortunately we could find no volunteers to take over from Barry who began and continuously updated the page. Barry is in the middle of his studies and can no longer continue.

It is sad to see it go, but we must thank Barry for all his efforts and wish him well for the future.

Purple evening....

Once upon a time - a very long time ago - Felixstowe Scribblers introduced their particular forerunner to flash fiction with their 'four word' exercises. Some members in the first few meetings decided they didn't like the idea of writing 'under pressure.'

Tonight the subject topic was drawn out as 'Purple.' From that one simple colourful word came twelve fascinating stories... twelve totally different concepts... and everyone drawing either smiles or a little shock horror.

One day we will record our meetings and see what the media make of them. 

The group we have at present is perhaps one of the most talented for a long, long time.

Our next meeting is in THREE weeks time when we hold an author's feedback session. Dave will read passages from his growing novel for, hopefully (!), constructive feedback whilst the rest of the group are asked to write between 750 and 1,000 words on 'The Crossing.'

Coming up quickly...

Our next meeting is virtually upon us already! It takes place on Tuesday (15 May) when we hold another of our Flash Fiction evenings. The great news is that there is no homework to do! The subject for the event will be drawn on the evening so, all that is needed is something to write on, something to write with - even a laptop or phone will do! One other thing too - and that is YOU!

Meeting Report

Minutes of Scribblers meeting held on 1 May 2018

Present: Liliane, Bridget, Cathy, Beryl, Di C, Tony, Anne, Kay, Mairead, Steve, Liz, Hazel, Jim, Derek.

Apologies: Dave, Dick, Di L.

Business:

We were delighted to welcome Jim back to the group – he’s been missed!

Tony’s book launch has been finalised for Saturday 19 May at 7pm at Felixstowe Library.

Dementia Friendly week – no further details have been provided for this, so we’ll just have to wait and see if anything is forthcoming before our next meeting.

Mairead as ever provided lots of treats, even branching out into savouries this time – many thanks to her for her generosity.

Thanks to Tony for working out the scoring for the Bill Budner competition.

Bill Budner Trophy:

A tremendous turn out for this competition evening, with twelve entries.

With Dick being unable to attend and do some reading for us, Cathy took his place, sharing the reading with Beryl.

The variety of stories was absolutely extraordinary, and the standard of writing extremely high.

There was only one point between first and second place – a rare occurrence.

Derek’s took first place with ‘The trunks of standard roses’

Kay’s ‘Hidden Treasure’ was second

Hazel came third with ‘The last of the magic’

Beryl’s ‘Mum’ took fourth place.

After the obligatory photo call, when the previous winner, Tony, presented Derek with the trophy, we all enjoyed a chat over coffee and cakes.

Next meeting: 15 May, when we will be having a flash fiction evening. So no homework this time.
