The Jack Wilkinson Memorial Trophy,

Congratulations to Jim for his winning story 'Katy' just beating Liz in second place with 'The Big Change' and Steve in third place with 'The Tuck Shop'.

Jim receiving the
Jack Wilkinson
Memorial Trophy.

Minutes of Scribblers meeting held on 21 August 2018
Present: Cathy, Liz, Derek, Jim, Steve, Anne, Gerry
Apologies: Bridget, Kay, Hazel, Peter, Dave, Beryl, Liliane, Tony

Business:
The group sent Dave their best wishes, and hoped that the operation his new grandson Noah was undergoing earlier in the day went without a hitch.

Readings of homework
No homework to read as it was competition time.
We had five entries for the Jack Wilkinson competition. Cathy and Steve shared the readings.
First place went to Jim, with his story ‘Katy’. Next was Liz, with ‘The big change’, and taking third place was Steve, with ‘The tuck shop’.
The remaining stories were ‘Desmond’s dinosaur circus’ by Derek, and ‘Well appointed’, by Anne.
As usual, this competition brought a terrific range of tales. Very difficult to make a choice between them, but we managed it!

A photograph of the winner being presented with his trophy will be forthcoming, thanks to Liz, who stood in as photographer for the evening. It will be sent separately from these minutes

By 8.30 we’d finished the competition etc, so that left us free to do a flash fiction exercise, had we wanted to – which we didn’t! Instead we enjoyed forty five minutes discussing our favourite books and authors, both currently and from our childhoods. We also covered the importance of getting children engaged with reading at an early age, and finding stories/writers to inspire them. A very pleasant way to complete the meeting.

Next meeting:
4 September, when the topic for homework is up to 1000 words on ‘Tales of place’. This can be any ‘place’ that you choose – from far flung shores to the local park – simply whatever takes your fancy.

The Competition

Just a reminder that tomorrow we hold the Jack Wilkinson Memorial Trophy meeting. It starts at 7.30 when the door will be locked. No names on your entries! Good luck to all!

Tuesday 7 August 2018

Another great meeting...

Once again a very well attended meeting despite the continuing heatwave although a brief rumble of thunder and an even briefer downpour did little to cool things down.

With some thirteen, one thousand word stories to be shared, the evening was packed with a plethora of imagination and superb creativity that it was a shame the meeting had to end. I've been attending for more years than I will admit, but I cannot remember so many marvellous stories that are shared week in and week out.

The Scribblers have always been a fine band of writers, but with a thought for today, could the current group be the best?

Next meeting on 21st August will be the 1,000 word competition for the Jack Wilkinson Memorial Trophy. The competition, in memory of our youngest member, is to write a story for or about children. No names on your entries please. Hopefully we will have two 'volunteers' reading the stories out.

Don't forget the meeting is due to start at 7.30 when the door will be locked.

Until then,

Keep Scribbling!!!

Our next meeting.

Just a quick reminder that our next meeting is on Tuesday 7th August at 7.30 in The Room at the Top, Felixstowe Library. The homework theme is to write up to 1,000 words including the phrase "I wish I had said..." That's an intriguing theme and leaves your skills open to some top class creativity.

Don't worry if the subject doesn't appeal as you can bring along a story on any other subject but remembering to stay withing the 1,000 word limit.

The door will be closed at 7.30.

Until Tuesday,

Keep Scribbling!!!
