Fancy being seduced?

Hello Scribblers!

Our next meeting takes place this coming Tuesday 4th April in The Room at the Top. Usual start time of 7.30.

Perhaps this is a meeting you will not want to miss as the homework theme was drawn out of the hat as "Seduction". Now I am not certain who dropped that into the bag of subjects - no it wasn't me! - but it might, and I say might, produce some rather interesting work. I'm sure the evening will live up to its usual high standards!

Looking forward to it.

Meanwhile something else to look forward to is Ruth's book launch at the library for her new book entitled "My sister and other liars". It takes place on Saturday 6th May at 6.00pm. It's free so go along if you can make it. I'm sure it will not only be interesting but definitely worthwhile.

Until Tuesday,

Keep Scribbling!!!

Dave

Ruth's book launch.

Suffolk crime author Ruth Dugdall will be launching her latest novel, "My Sister and Other Liars", in three libraries across Suffolk.
Each event is free, and open to all, and Ruth will be reading from her book which is set in Felixstowe and Ipswich. There will also be refreshments and the opportunity to purchase a book and have it signed by the author.
The three events are:
Saturday 6th May, Felixstowe Library (6pm)
Thursday 11th May, Chantry Library (6pm)
Tuesday 23rd May, Newmarket Library (7pm)
For more details contact Ruth via her website (Ruthdugdall.com) or by visiting her Facebook page (Ruth Dugdall author).

Suffolk Libraries Presents

This is just to let you know that we have booked another two films. If you are interested in either of the screenings below call in for tickets or phone us on 01394 694880.

EXHIBITION
The Artist’s Garden
Fri  28 April
Two showings:  3pm and 7pm     £7.50

Following the smash hit Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse, comes this new film based on the hugely popular exhibition The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement 1887-1920.  Taking its lead from French artists such as Monet and Cezanne, American Impressionism followed its own path which over a thirty year period reveals as much about America as a nation as it does about a much-loved artistic movement.  A mesmerising film that is a feast for the eyes.

THEATRE
The Railway Children
Fri 26 May  7pm     £7.50

Filmed at the National Railway Museum, York.
Features the original locomotive from the 1970 film.
Roberta, Phyllis and Peter, three sheltered siblings, suffer a huge upheaval when their father, who works for the Foreign Office, is falsely imprisoned.
The children and their mother, now penniless, are forced to move from London to rural Yorkshire, into a cottage near a railway line, where they befriend the local railway porter, Perks, and embark on a magical journey of discovery, friendship and adventure.  But the mystery remains – where is Father, and is he ever coming back?

Meeting report

Minutes of Scribblers meeting held on Tuesday 21 March 2017

Present:  Anne, Beryl, Mairead, Liliane, Di, Cathy
Apologies: Dave, Steve, Jim

Business:
In Dave’s absence, Cathy chaired the meeting. All hoped Dave’s hospital visit (reason for his absence) went well.

Our usual thanks to Mairead for providing lots of delicious goodies for us to eat.

Anthology: Cathy reminded everyone that Dave would be looking for work to be submitted to him for formatting – Dave to give reminder of deadlines etc at next meeting.

Discussion about flash fiction sessions. The evening’s low attendance suggested that flash fiction doesn’t seem to be a popular element for everyone. Those who did come wondered whether one of the flash fiction events could return to the old format of everyone bringing in four different words on individual slips of paper, putting them in a hat, giving them a shake up, then each person selecting four to use as inspiration for a story. Cathy to suggest this to Dave as an option.

Flash fiction: the ‘theme’ drawn was “Well, she certainly would not do that again.”, and it had to be the final sentence of the piece.

Hard? Very.
Enjoyable? Hmmm, the jury’s out on that!
Worthwhile? Definitely – it made everyone really think, and the resulting stories all showed merit, even if the writers themselves weren’t too happy with them.

With so few present, we had the luxury of time to chat about our writing ambitions, and of the trials and satisfactions involved in writing work that we could be proud of. We all agreed that the type of activity we’d just completed in the meeting, whilst being very testing, was a valuable part of every writer’s learning curve.

Homework: the theme drawn was ‘seduction’ – should make for some interesting listening next time!

Next meeting: 4 April, with up to 1000 words on the topic above

Next meeting and other info

Hi Scribblers,

That time is almost upon us once again. Our next meeting, a flash fiction evening, takes place in the Room at the Top this coming Tuesday 21st March. Start time is 7.30pm.

For this meeting, the subject for the Flash Fiction will be drawn out of the ‘bag’ so that everyone starts on a level playing field.

Cathy will be leading the meeting as I will be unable to attend but will be back the the next time.

Coming soon... the Felixstowe Book Festival. In preparation for the event we will be publishing a new anthology. Having met the printers we have agreed to have the prepared anthology passed to them on a memory stick by 1st June. Now that means an awful lot of work between now and then. We estimate the same basic size but probably with far less photographs this time round – there are only so many we can find!

What I am asking is that you select at least one but preferably two of your stories that you consider will be a great addition to the anthology – if last time is anything to go by then virtually anything you have written will be suitable. Please, though, try to edit your stories as best you can and then send them to me via scribblers.1@btinternet,com This email address comes directly to me so there will be no ‘spying eyes’ on your story until publication. As always the copyright of the work will remain with you.

Like last time consideration is being given to asking scribblers of old to help bolster the anthology. Their stories last time provided an excellent addition to our finished article.

We intend to market the book at £5 per copy once again and hopefully manage to sell out!

Talking of book festivals, throughout his month the Essex Book Festival is taking place and details of their remaining events can be found at https://btmail.bt.com/www.essexbookfestival.org.uk

Next Monday sees the next Ipswich Writers’ Cafe. This is on Monday 20th March
Starting at 7:30pm at La Tour Cycle Cafe on 17 Tower Street, Ipswich, Organiser Ed would love to see you attend.

Anne has kindly forwarded details of a competition to us and these are shown below.

Until next time,
Keep Scribbling!
Dave.

Meeting report

Minutes of Scribblers meeting held on Tuesday 7 March 2017

Present:  Dave, Anne, Jim, Beryl, Steve, Mairead, Liliane, Daniel, Tony, Cathy
Apologies: Mel, Jane, Di

Business:
Lovely to have such a good turnout for the evening.

Anthology – Dave hasn’t been able to get over to Gipping Press yet, but hopes to do so next week.

Next meeting – Dave reminded the group that he won’t be here for this flash fiction, so Cathy will be leading it.

Thanks -  due to Mairead, firstly for organising our meal at the Orwell on 28 February, and secondly for  bringing in cakes etc as treats for those of the group who had not been present at the meal at the Orwell, (plus extras for the rest of us!) – they were much enjoyed. We are grateful too for her donation of two new teatowels for the group’s use.

Readings of homework, written on the theme of ‘coincidence’. Many and varied were the tales we heard – encompassing online dating sites, politicians, murder, history – and a lot more besides.

Dave – Secret liaisons

Steve – The inheritance

Jim – Coincidence

Mairead – Hy Brasil

Liliane – How could this have happened?

Cathy – The coincidence

Daniel – The sea of love

Anne – Garage forecourt

Tony – A walk in the green forest

Beryl – A flash of lightning

There was time after every reading for the group to give feedback on each other’s work, which all of us found helpful.

Next meeting: 21 March, when it will be the flash fiction, so no homework this time.

Tuesday 7 March 2017

What a coincidence...

Another excellent mixture of stories for this homework theme. A coincidence perhaps that everyone provided words on the subject matter!

The meeting was well attended despite some absentees but, overall, the attendance has been pretty steady of late. Let it continue this way or, perhaps, increase just a little.

The evening also saw Mairead arrive with a large bag of cakes for the consumption of... and, guess what? They were  consumed! Thank you Mairead.

Congratulations on the engagement of Giles Meehan who produced the never forgotten 'Lost Sock' and his fiancee Jess. Great news!

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 21st March when we will hold a flash fiction evening (start 7.30pm). So there's no homework this time and the subject for the flash fiction will be drawn on the evening.

Until then...

Keep Scribbling!

Sunday 5 March 2017

Our next meeting

How time flies when you're having fun...

We had our meal at the Orwell as planned and it was an evening we almost all enjoyed. There was a hiccup with the meal orders which was not of our doing but it was righted without too much delay. There was plenty of chat and laughter through the evening with our friend Dick relaying many humorous memories of his days as a school teacher.

We also hear there is a possibility that one of our former members, Sue Smith, might rejoin the group after Easter. She is a children's poet who also wrote children's stories on our homework themes. She sends her wishes to all those who remember her.

Coming up this very Tuesday (7th March) is our next meeting when the theme for the evening is 'Coincidence'. Hopefully you will all manage to write up to 1,000 words on what could be a fascinating subject. The meeting starts at 7.30.

Hope to see you there,

Keep Scribbling!
