Incorporating
the

REPORT OF THE MEETING HELD 16th FEBRUARY 2010

Apologies: Ruth, Debbie, Jane and Trish.

Present: Peter, Ally, Simon, Ros, Liliane, Dick, Barry, Linda, Shaun, Angela, Rosie, Tony and Dave (chair).

SCRIBBLERS NEWS

Last year we held a writer’s weekend when Maureen Blundell was a guest speaker at our winter dinner. She held a number of 1-1 sessions with some Scribblers and also a group session as well.

Although there won’t have a dinner this time round, a similar weekend has been proposed for March 27-28 at the Castle Lodge Hotel when Maureen is offering to hold a group workshop (probably on Sunday morning, 10-12) on, perhaps, viewpoint/painting pictures in words. This would cost £15 but includes coffee etc. On the Saturday Maureen would hold individual (1 to 1) sessions lasting 1 hour plus providing a critique of a 1,000 word draft together with coffee and biscuits, again for £15.

Interested writers should book direct with Maureen at liberato@talktalk.net. The weekend will only take place if sufficient bookings are made.

It is also possible that we could have a social gathering on Saturday night at The Grosvenor where there are 2 for 1 meal offers available. This is where we used to have our social functions and have always been pleased with the food and service. If you are interested in coming along for an evening meal on the Saturday (27th March) then we need to know quite quickly so a booking can be made. Wives, husbands, lovers and partners all welcome!

We have recently heard from Maureen Budner who has been unwell and helping with her triplet grandchildren born in October last year. She has not organised a short story competition this year and thinks perhaps it has run its course but has kindly offered sponsorship in the future.

Maureen has been so kind to the Scribblers in the past with the competitions in memory of her husband and our friend Bill, the fact is that Bill will not be forgotten as we have our own tribute to him with the Bill Budner Trophy that we vie for three times a year.

Maureen is helping with an event at St Mary's Church at present. An old friend of Bill's who is a professional actor is doing a one man presentation of Mark's Gospel on Friday 12th March and would be pleased to see any Scribblers there. Details with times and prices are shown on a poster on our weblog at http://scribblers2010.blogspot.com

As we have mentioned, Barry’s novel “Strictly a Family Affair” is now available for sale. Copies may be purchased from the Internet on Authorhouse Bookshop for £11.55 inc. PP and enter the title or Barry J Darnell; from Amazon UK bookshop, for £13.40; or by contacting Barry by email when the books are being sold for a bargain £9.99. Get your copy now!

Talking of books we hear that the corrected copy of Morag’s book should soon be out. We look forward to that.

Angela was featured on Felixstowe Radio by presenter Janet Cundy last Sunday evening and gave the Scribblers a good plug.

Nice to hear that Dave hopes to return to work at the beginning of March – subject to a further hospital visit.

Don’t forget that a Writers’ Café has been arranged at Starbucks in the Buttermarket, Ipswich for 7.30pm Monday 15 March. Admission is free and this time there is no need to book a place – just turn up. Names of those wishing to read will be drawn from a hat but there is a time limit of five minutes per story or poem.

Also coming up in June is ‘A Writing Holiday in Italy’ that has been organised and arranged jointly between Caroline Foster of Creative Writing Groups and Angela. Details are posted on our weblog at http://scribblers2010.blogspot.com

More articles will be added over time, so you may want to bookmark that - and you can also leave comments on each page if you wish to.

She will be doing more interviews with writers (and creative people in general.) If you are interested in taking part, please contact her at address below.

Share a Photo of Your Workspace!

If you're a self-confessed nosey-parker lover of interior design, then perhaps you also share my fascination with other people's creative workspaces.

Adele likes to see how other people have set out their own workspace, how they've arranged their stuff; if they're orderly or chaotic; what gadgets and/or books they use; how they utilise the space, etc. Have they personalised their space, or it is totally utilitarian?

She's had an idea... If you're a writer, artist, musician, handicrafter - anything creative - send a photo of your workspace in the body of an email (no attachments will be opened) and a 400-word (maximum) description of who you are and what you do, and maybe a photo of yourself and she'll create a Hubpage dedicated to the mysteries of workspaces!

Please feel free to share this with people who you think might be interested in participating.

The 4th Annual Ted Walters International Short Story, Poetry and Playwriting Competition 2010

I would like to take this opportunity to wish a very’ Happy and Peaceful New Year’ for 2010 to all my fellow writers throughout this big, wonderful but sadly troubled world that we all presently share. My name is Tommy McBride, and I am the Group Secretary and very proud Founder Member of ‘The University of Liverpool Creative Writing Society for Lifelong Learning’, which I set up with the kind help and support of The University of Liverpool almost a decade ago now, way back in May 2000. I spent many very enjoyable years there studying most of the different genres of creative writing there.

We are a non-funded but very successful Merseyside creative writing group who are totally independent of The University of Liverpool, but we have always had the full support, help and assistance of the University of Liverpool’s Continuing Education Centre for the last ten long but very enjoyable years.

The reason why I am contacting you all now is to tell you about our latest exciting ‘Open’ creative writing competition that is annually attracting some of the world’s best writers entitled, ‘The 4th Annual Ted Walters International Short Story, Poetry and Playwriting Competition 2010’ that was officially launched on Tuesday 19th January 2010. This will be our writing group’s fourth annual Ted Walters international writing competition that our creative group has run now, and we hope that this competition will be just as successful, or even more successful as our last three competitions have been.

Every single entry that comes into our competition; and you can send in as many entries as you wish, generates a £1 donation for our writing group’s chosen charity, which has always been the ‘Macmillan Cancer Support’. We donated a cheque to them in 2007 for the amount of £374. In 2008, Liverpool’s year as ‘The European Capital of Culture for 2008’, we proudly donated a cheque to them for the amount of £801. Last year in 2009 we donated a further £470 totalling £1645 so far. Hopefully for this year of 2010 we would like to generate even more much needed money for such a truly worthy cause that continues to help and support cancer sufferers, but to do this successfully we will need your help, co-operation, participation and support in this writing competition.

Please see our Web site address for all of our writing competition details, including an entry form to download for ‘The 4th Annual Ted Walters International Short Story, Poetry and Playwriting Competition 2010’, which also includes a list of last years successful winners, runner-ups and third placed, and those writers who were short listed, as well as a competition flyer to advertise the event. Closing date is 31st May 2010
http://www.the-village.co.uk/tedwalters.htm

This competition was set up by me with the full consent of all of our creative writing group members, to remember one of our own dearly missed and very talented writing group members, Mr Ted Walters, who was in himself an excellent writer and a wonderful compassionate, caring, human being, who sadly died of Cancer on the 15th August 2006.

I know most of you like me, after having witnessed the devastation and the tremendous loss and sufferings of both human and animal’s lives, during and after the horrendous earthquake that we saw and heard on our TV’s and Radio stations on the Island of Haiti, are deeply upset. I am sure that all of our special thoughts and prayers as well as the courageous specialised manual help and assistance from many concerned countries, will go out to all those unfortunate inhabitants of that small Island at this their very sad time of the year. The inhabitants whose lives have been deeply affected and devastated by a huge earthquake measuring 7.0 that rocked their impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti, toppling their buildings and causing widespread death, damage disaster and panic. God bless and please help them all.

Kind Regards
Tommy McBride:
Group Secretary / Founder Member.

Our Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 16th February at 7.30pm in the Room at the Top in Felixstowe Library. The homework assignment is to write, for this meeting only, 750 words on any historical subject or character that pre-dates the second world war. Now this provides the widest possible range of subjects. It is a fascinating idea and hopefully will provide another aspect to our writing abilities.

The 1,500 word assignments will be undertaken by Peter and Simon.

We hear on the grapevine that Janet Cundy of Felixstowe Radio has interviewed our Angela and talks about her story that was short-listed in the Ip-art 2009 Short Story competition which she preferred to Angela's story that won in 2008! Janet reads the story out too - giving it her own interpretation. It is meant to be "tongue-in-cheek" with a gentle touch of humour. Angela remarks that 'any resemblance to real live characters etc. etc. is PURELY ACCIDENTAL!!!!' Intriguing! The programme goes out this Sunday between 6 and 8 p.m. on www.felixstoweradio.co.uk.

Until Tuesday,

Meet and Greet Daisy Cooper

Stephen Tuthill has the exciting news that he has arranged a "Meet and Greet" with the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Suffolk Coastal Daisy Cooper on this Sunday 7th 3-4.30pm; everyone is invited. This is a great time to meet and get to know the person who will be running for the Liberal Democrats when the General Election is called.

Daisy Cooper is an exciting mid-twenties person who is eager to fight for, campaign for, and if elected work for the people of Suffolk Coastal and Stephen can definitely recommend taking the chance to meet her and find out a bit more about her. She has a website which is www.Daisycooper.co.uk, and that is well worth taking note of too.

If you want to attend, the address is:

27B Albert Walk
Felixstowe
01394 275171
07903 976255

It doesn't have Stephen's name on the buzzer as it still has the previous tenants names on there, but it does say 27B and its the top buzzer out of four.

Directions:

Stephen says "The directions are: By the Iceland Car Park is the Lloyds TSB Car Park, come through the Lloyds TSB car park and turn left into the cobbled Albert Walk. You'll see a long straight metal staircase ahead of you, and if you go up that staircase you will come to the buzzer; ring that and I will let you in.

"I look forward to seeing you all there, but for planning cases if you would definitely like to come would you please let me know so that I can plan how many nibbles to buy and what to buy, for example if someone is a vegetarian I don't want to buy just sausage rolls.

"Once again, the time is 3pm to 4.30pm on Sunday 7th March; if you want to have time to talk to her I would come earlier than later as she has to get to Woodbridge by 5pm so will have to leave sharp at 4.30pm."
