Meeting report

Minutes of Scribblers meeting held on Tuesday 21 March 2017

Present:  Anne, Beryl, Mairead, Liliane, Di, Cathy
Apologies: Dave, Steve, Jim

Business:
In Dave’s absence, Cathy chaired the meeting. All hoped Dave’s hospital visit (reason for his absence) went well.

Our usual thanks to Mairead for providing lots of delicious goodies for us to eat.

Anthology: Cathy reminded everyone that Dave would be looking for work to be submitted to him for formatting – Dave to give reminder of deadlines etc at next meeting.

Discussion about flash fiction sessions. The evening’s low attendance suggested that flash fiction doesn’t seem to be a popular element for everyone. Those who did come wondered whether one of the flash fiction events could return to the old format of everyone bringing in four different words on individual slips of paper, putting them in a hat, giving them a shake up, then each person selecting four to use as inspiration for a story. Cathy to suggest this to Dave as an option.

Flash fiction: the ‘theme’ drawn was “Well, she certainly would not do that again.”, and it had to be the final sentence of the piece.

Hard? Very.
Enjoyable? Hmmm, the jury’s out on that!
Worthwhile? Definitely – it made everyone really think, and the resulting stories all showed merit, even if the writers themselves weren’t too happy with them.

With so few present, we had the luxury of time to chat about our writing ambitions, and of the trials and satisfactions involved in writing work that we could be proud of. We all agreed that the type of activity we’d just completed in the meeting, whilst being very testing, was a valuable part of every writer’s learning curve.

Homework: the theme drawn was ‘seduction’ – should make for some interesting listening next time!

Next meeting: 4 April, with up to 1000 words on the topic above
