Meeting Report: 4th June

We were a bit short of members attending tonight but nevertheless we had a good meeting with lots of different versions of our homework 'Teams'.

Those attending were Dave, Dick, Liliane, Barry M, Tony, Martin, Les and yours truly.
We had apologies from Caz who is on holiday, Beryl, Angela and Ray who has been tending to a sick spouse.

We began the meeting with a story from Barry M called The Last Cub Camp and told of Phoebe, an ambitious young lady who was attending her last cub meeting before graduating to the scouts. She was intent on winning the cup or even both cups at the camp for her Red one Team. She eventually did win both cups but not with controversy.

Next came Tony. His stories are always a challenge to the writer of this report because of the language he uses (not bad) and this one was no different. It was entitled Further Trouble With Inflation. Needless to say it had nothing to do with our country's economy but merely referred to the way, in his vocabulary, he always increases the words to, too and two to three. It is sometimes hard to keep up with the gist of his stories with this going on. Very entertaining.

Martin was next with another fantasy tale entitled Netball Team. This was a trip to fantasy island once again with lots of famous names and an attempt to imagine how women of the past eg Ann Boleyn would behave today.

My contribution was a story about a young boy trying to live his life at school having inherited the extra large genes of his father. He did not excel in sports until he found his place as 'The Anchor Man' in the school tug o war team.

Dave gave us Team Player which told of Terry Thomson, a detective who thought the world revolved around him. He and a female companion were diverted to an important call to look for a red Transit van and at a remote spot on the road, just when the van was due he insisted he needed a 'comfort break' in the bushes. He left the patrol car and then was left behind the bush as the suspect van appeared. His woman DC chased the van and apprehended the culprit and was congratulated on a good job. Terry Thomson took a while to live down the humiliation of being left in a bush.

Les was late arriving and had mistakenly brought homework from another meeting on Challenge but it was an entertaining tale of how a computer does to him what they do to us all at times and that is to have a mind of their own and of crashes leading to lost work. We know how he feels.

Dick told, in his story, Cheats Never Prosper, how sometimes cheats did prosper and how when they attended Grafton School  he and several other boys used to deceive the sports teacher into thinking they had successfully completed the cross country runs but in truth they hid in a shelter until the rest of the boys had passed and then were spied returning.

Liliane was our only female member again tonight and her story was entitled A Day at the Races and told of a family outing in ancient Rome and how the boys admired the charioteers but were told by their father it was not the occupation for well brought up young Romans. The girls loved to attend the plays they attended.

We had a visit from Sarah, a photographer from Suffolk Magazine who took some photos, some of which will be in the magazine's August issue. Out at the end of July. With any luck in conjunction with the Felixstowe Book Festival it will encourage a few new members.

The next meeting has a geographical theme and if anyone did not attend and wants a place name just drop me a line.

Thanks to those who attended.

Barry.
