William Shaw, a Chief Armourer, was involved in the gun trials prior to the commissioning of HMS Warspite in 1915.
Wally Shaw, his son, served on the Warspite in 1940-42 in the Mediterranean under Admiral Cunningham.
In 1992, Wally attended a Memorial Service for all the crew who had ever served on board HMS Warpite in her long, active and successful career. At that event, CPO ‘Jeff’ Barker, Secretary of the Warspite Association, asked the remaining crew to document their experiences aboard the ‘Grand Old Lady’ as she was affectionately known.
This book is the report that Wally wrote of his two-year’s service, some 50 years after the event!
Wally’s son, Chris Shaw, re-discovered this report in 2012, and rather than have it lost to history, decided to turn it in to a book.
A framed print by Derek Shapiro, given to Wally by Chris, which also adorns the front cover, was, on Wally’s passing, given to Shean Shaw, Chris’s son, together with William’s, and Wally’s medals.
This, then, completes four generations of the Shaw family’s links with the battleship, HMS Warspite.

RIP. HMS Warspite, and all who sailed in her.

Chris Shaw is a retired pharmacist, born in Felixstowe, Suffolk. He worked in the Caribbean for seven years before emigrating to Cairns, Queensland, Australia, where he’s been for forty years. His only connection with the sea, apart from a love of fishing, is that he once sunk a boat, many miles away from civilisation: something that none of his forbears have achieved.
